Final Year Project
Building Energy Signature, Measurement, Recording and Forecasting
Energy consumption control and monitoring play crucial roles in achieving energy savings in urban areas. By leveraging energy signatures, building owners can optimize their energy usage, reduce costs, and contribute to a sustainable future. Various techniques have been implemented to measure building energy consumption over time. One such technique is the energy signature, which allows for the analysis and prediction of energy use in multi-family buildings. In this study, sensor-based integrated devices, specifically ESP (Embedded Systems Platforms), were utilized to collect the required data and transmit it to cloud storage. Detailed data analysis was performed using Python data cleaning techniques to ensure that accurate and model-friendly data is fed to forecasting models.
To enable accurate forecasting and prediction of energy consumption, different algorithms were applied to the collected data. Random Forest, LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), and GRU (Gated Recurrent Unit) models were employed as part of the forecasting process. Random Forest, a machine learning ensemble method, was used to identify key features and patterns in the data. LSTM and GRU, which are specialized recurrent neural network architectures, were employed to capture and model the sequential dependencies and to successfully forecast the power consumption using unseen data. models were compared using different evaluation metrics and the best among them was chosen to be deployed on the web.
The web application was developed to provide an easy-to-use and user-friendly interface for a user to sign up and login and to use our trained model to accurately predict the power consumption of the building.
